The SoBoCo Eagles boys basketball team didn’t shoot like a top-ranked team, but they had one important hallmark of a No. 1 ranked team – they found a way to win.

In their 61-55 win over the Boonville Pirates at Mizzou Arena on Sunday, the Eagles shot only 45% – and only 4-of-18 from three-point land – but they combined their athletic ability to get to the hoop with tenacious defense and used a 17-10 second quarter run to win the game.

“We worked to get them to take shots they didn’t want to take,” said Eagles coach Andy Jahnsen, “I was really pleased with our defense today.”

SoBoCo’s Sam Stichnote was named the Outstanding Player of the Shootout win over Boonville. Stichnote scored 23 points and had 11 rebounds in the win.

The Eagles were led by Sam Stichnote with 23 points and 11 rebounds, Maguire Scheer with 13 points and 6 steals and Spencer Taggart with 10 points.

Both teams started slowly and never really got used to shooting in cavernous Mizzou Arena. But the Eagles got a pair of baskets to open the second quarter, sandwiched around a hoop from Scheer, a 3-pointer from Clay Jeffery off the bench and another 3-pointer to end the half by Scheer.

The Eagles had pulled out to a 31-19 lead and would never relinquish control in the second half, running the lead to as many as 16 with 3:42 left in the game.

Stichnote salted away his Outstanding Player award in the third period when he scored on a layup, stole the in-bounds pass and scored on the layup. On the next trip down the court, he grabbed the offensive board and got the put-back and then hit a pair of free throws on the Eagles’ next possession.
