August T. “Augie” Begemann, Jr., age 90 years, of Jefferson City, Mo., passed away Thursday, November 17, 2022 at Heisinger Bluffs.

  He was born on August 6, 1932 in Hartsburg, Mo., the son of August and Pauline (Lenecke) Begemann, Sr. He was married on November 21, 1953 in Hartsburg, Mo. to DeLois Nichols who preceded him in death on July 12, 2012.

  A lifelong resident of the Central Missouri area, Augie graduated from Ashland High School in 1950.  He excelled in sports during those years and went on to play Minor League Baseball for the New York Giants. He quickly earned a reputation as a skilled left-handed pitcher. Later in life he was inducted into the Southern Boone Baseball Hall of Fame by the Ashland Optimist Club.

  He began his career with the Missouri Highway Department working as a material inspector. He dedicated 38 years of service prior to his retirement in 1992.

  He was a man of faith, holding membership at Central United Church of Christ and was a past member of the Central Missouri Officials Association.    

  Augie was always there to lend a smile, his time, a friendly conversation, or just make family and friends feel special. He was an avid sports fan, especially loved watching Missouri Tigers football and basketball, Cardinal baseball and the St. Louis Rams. Augie’s love of baseball continued throughout his entire life. He coached and managed various youth and adult baseball teams for many years in the central Missouri area.  One of his proudest accomplishments was coaching his son’s Babe Ruth team into the World Series in 1970. He also was a long time high school basketball referee.

  In his later years, Augie enjoyed living life on his farm and raising cattle alongside his sons near Henley, Mo. He was well known for his big smile, cherished the times spent with his family and friends and will be greatly missed.

  Survivors include: two sons, Darrell Begemann and Gale Begemann both of Henley, Mo.; one sister, DeLores Vahrenberg of Hartsburg, Mo.; two granddaughters, Ashley Pharris and Kara Begemann.

  He was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife of 59 years, DeLois; two sisters and 4 brothers.

  Visitation will be held at Freeman Mortuary from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. Monday, November 21, 2022. Graveside service and interment with the Reverend Jason Abbott officiating will follow at Riverview Cemetery.

  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Central Church of Jefferson City or a charity of the Donor’s Choice.
