Catherine Sapp was named the new commander of the Ashland American Legion at the Tuesday, June 21 meeting. She is the first woman to hold this position in Ashland.

Sapp, 47, graduated from Brazoswood High School in Jackson, Texas in 1986. Two years later she joined the Air Force and served for 10 years, retiring in 1998.

Sapp said she joined the Air Force because it is a family tradition.

“I have two uncles who joined, my dad joined, my grandfather joined,” Sapp said. “It basically runs in the family.”

After leaving the Air Force Sapp worked for the state before becoming a program support assistant at USDA in Columbia in October.

Sapp said she wanted to become commander because of the comradery.
