1026-VoteButton-RedIf you plan on taking your smart phone with you when you vote on November 8, think again about taking that selfie photo with your ballot to post on Instagram or Facebook. Boone County Clerk Wendy Noren said Monday that such photos were illegal in Missouri, although the century-old law would not likely be one of her top priorities on election day. Noren said it has been interesting to her to see the number of stories from across the nation on whether or not taking a photo of your marked ballot and posting the digital photo for your friends and family to see was legal. The Associated Press started the discussion by combing through the laws in all 50 states relating to the legality of taking a selfie in the voting booth. In 16 states, including Kansas, Colorado, Illinois and others, it is expressly illegal and can earn you a fine or a short stay in jail. The AP listed Missouri as “legally unclear,” but Noren said she thought the law was quite clear. “It is against the law in Missouri to tell people how you voted or showing your ballot to others,” Noren said, “although I don’t know that we will have the time to deal with those problems.”
