Multimedia storyteller, Sarah Poff, performed “Hearing Hazel’s Story” in an engaging presentation at Iowa Storytelling Festival in Clear Water, Iowa on Saturday July 22, 2023.

Sarah told the story of Hazel Hunkins, a young lady who received a chemistry degree from the University of Missouri in the 1912-1913 school year. She had trouble finding a job in a man’s world. Frustrated with this situation, she traveled to Washington, D.C. and fought for passage of the 19th Amendment, being arrested and mobbed along the way. She was there in D.C. as women gained the right to vote. Sarah tells Hazel’s compelling story from childhood to helping President Carter with the Equal Rights Amendment in 1977. Sarah Poff moved to Ashland just two years ago.

We thank Sarah for sharing her talent and for representing Southern Boone!
