During the past two weeks, the SBC soccer team took on three district opponents plus Fatima. Unfortunately, the Eagles were short-handed for all four matches – sometimes with as many as four starters out of the lineup for various reasons. First, the team traveled to Mexico on Sept. 26 to face the Bulldogs (5-5-2). Mexico played their traditional high-back, trapping style defense and drew SBC into several offside calls during the first half. The Eagles finally took the lead in the 30th minute when captain Drew Dial won the ball in the defensive third of the pitch and sent a long pass through the Bulldogs’ back line.
Tim Lutz ran onto the ball and beat the keeper to give the Eagles the 1-0 lead; which is where the score would stand for the remaining 50 minutes.SBC had several chances to add to their lead, but couldn’t convert. The Eagles young back line of junior Ethan Brown and sophomores Zach Hawkins, Chase Rackers, and Jackson Woodward did what was needed to keep Mexico off the scoreboard. Junior Emery Arnold recorded the shutout in goal. The JV Eagles had no problems scoring in their abbreviated match, winning the contest 3-0. Caleb Goodsell netted the first two goals, and then Kael McLeod added his first goal of the season. Freshman Riley McGee earned the shutout in goal.
