The SoBoCo Eagles soccer team could not find a way to put the game-winner in the net in regulation and Boonville found a way to score on a counter attack in OT to squeak out a 2-1 overtime win in the Sectional round of the Class 2 playoffs last Tuesday.
The loss ended the Eagles season at 17-7-2. The Pirates saw their season end on Saturday with a loss in the quarterfinal round to Monett.
“We had several great chances, but we didn’t finish,” said Eagles coach Chris Miller. “It was probably the best game we played all year.”
The Eagles dominated the run of play for most of the game, putting 14 shots on goal to Boonville’s 8 and out-shooting the Pirates overall 31-18.
The Booneville goalie made several good saves, and one outstanding leaping save of an Ian McCluskey shot in the overtime period.
McCluskey got the initial goal of the game but Boonville tied it just before halftime on a penalty kick.
“The referee said we shoved him, but you can clearly see that they have their shoulder into each other – there was no push,” Miller said.
The Pirates forward did not go down, however, the call was made and Alex Adair converted the PK to tie the game.
The second half was dominated by the Eagles – who could not either put the ball in the net, get the ‘lucky bounce’ needed or a referee’s call. Midway through the period, a handball inside the penalty area was overlooked and McCluskey was physically marked by a pair of Pirates each time he touched the ball.
