After an 0-1 start to the season, the Southern Boone boys soccer team responded with a pair of home wins to open September.

The Eagles (3-1) opened the week with a 1-0 overtime win against Osage last Tuesday. Junior Miles Butler scored the only goal for either team, coming in the first overtime period.

Southern Boone moved above .500 by taking down Elsberry with Silex 8-0. Seven different players scored goals in the match for the Eagles. The only player with two goals was junior Titus Pridemore.

The Eagles opened their road schedule with a 3-1 win at Moberly. They next hit the road once again, taking on Eugene at 5 p.m. Thursday in Eugene.

Eagles softball finishes seventh at Summit Varsity Tournament

It was a tale of two days for Southern Boone softball at the Summit Varsity Tournament in Chesterfield. The Eagles (7-2) opened the tournament 2-0 on Friday with a 6-3 win over Silex and a 12-5 win in eight innings over Jackson.

The second day, the team finished 1-2, losing 7-6 to Marquette and 5-3 to Lindbergh before bouncing back with an 11-10 win over Rockwood Summit.

The offense was on fire all weekend, averaging 6.3 runs across the six games. Senior catcher Gracie Britton was a top performer for the Eagles, hitting a two-run home run against Marquette and racking up three hits in the win over Rockwood Summit.

Senior shortstop Brooklyn Center was nominated for the all-tournament team after 14 putouts on defense.

The Eagles’ next game comes against Hickman at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in Columbia.

Southern Boone girls golf wins pair of events

The Southern Boone girls golf team opened its week with its first win of the season in a tri-meet against Boonville and Marshall. The Eagles won the event by 15 strokes, finishing at 190.

Senior Breckyn Shewmake and junior Courtney Hargis both finished the event in podium spots. Shewmake finished second with a 39, while Hargis finished third with a 43.

The team won again in a quad meet against Harrisburg, Palmyra and Mexico, finishing at 200. Shewmake won the event outright with a total of 44. Hargis and senior Harper Hanrahan split the bronze at 50 each.

The Eagles travel to the Helias Invitational on Wednesday in Jefferson City. Afterward, they host their first home meet against New Bloomfield and Glasgow on Thursday in Ashland.

Eagles boys finish second, girls place three in top 20 in cross country opener

The Southern Boone cross country teams opened their seasons at the Salisbury 3500 on Tuesday in Salisbury.

The boys team finished second, with its top five racking up 87 points. Senior George Cabrera took home silver as the top Eagles finisher with a time of 11 minutes, 30.09 seconds. Freshman Maddox Kennedy made a strong debut with an 11:51.36, finishing ninth overall.

Junior Jackson Campbell was the next-highest Southern Boone finisher, taking the 14th spot at 12:22.15. The Eagles had two more place within the top 60 to secure second.

The girls team only sent four racers to the event, which wasn’t enough to qualify for a team position. The Eagles found plenty of success, though, with three racers finishing in the top 30.

Junior Julia Volkart was the highest finisher at 12th with a time of 14:59.52. Freshman Harlee Collins impressed in her debut, ending with a time of 15:45.47 in 20th place. Junior Joey Rice finished shortly behind in 26th with a time of 16:26.34.

The teams’ next meets will be at the Tolton Catholic Invitational on Saturday in Columbia.

Volleyball starts season 1-0

The Southern Boone volleyball team won its season opener, sweeping New Bloomfield 3-0 on Thursday in New Bloomfield. Sophomore Payton Germann served all 25 points in the second set, as the Eagles won that set 25-0. This marked the fourth straight season in which Southern Boone has swept the Wildcats.

The Eagles (1-0) play their home opener against Camdenton at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in Ashland. Southern Boone will hit the road the next day against Linn at 7 p.m. Thursday in Linn.
