Eagles Volleyball Grabs Conference Win

The SoBoCo volleyball team bounced back from a Monday loss to grab a conference win over Versailles on Tuesday night, however, the SoBoCo soccer team fell at Jeff City and the Eagles softball team fell from the ranks of the unbeaten in a loss to Helias.
Strong hitting from Hannah Crow and serving by Emma Straub led the Eagles to a two-game win over the Versailles Tigers in an overheated SoBoCo gym.
While the air conditioning at the SoBoCo gym was on the fritz, there was nothing wrong with Crow’s rocket hitting from the outside. Katy Andrews and Carsyn Morris adding blocking to the middle and the Eagles rolled to a 25-20, 25-20 win. Setter Janae King served the winning points and coach Jamie Nelson said she was pleased with her team’s serving as well as their play at the net. While SoBoCo had trouble at times with their passing and allowed Versailles to stay in the game, the Eagles grabbed important points in the match when they needed them most.
SoBoCo, now 5-2, will play this weekend in the Camdenton Tournament.

The Eagles softball team fell behind Helias 4-0 in the second inning and could not catch up, losing for the first time this season by a 7-2 score.
SoBoCo’s Kate Ponder, Kylee Lammers and Bri Volle teamed up to create some offense for the Eagles and put a pair of runs on the board, however, the Crusaders bats were hot and they added three more runs for the 7-2 final. The Eagles are now 7-1 on the season and will play Hallsville in the conference game at home on Thursday.

If ESPN had an “instant classic” channel for high school soccer, Tuesday’s Eagles vs Jeff City game would be playing for weeks into the future.
The Jays outlasted the Eagles in penalty kicks for a 2-1 win – but just getting to that point left players and fans exhausted.
Jeff City scored their only goal in regulation in the first half, but freshman Rece Gilmore tied the game in the second half with a 25-yard bomb that struck the bottom of the goal’s crossbar and went into the goal. Gilmore’s shot and the Eagles defense – with some terrific goal keeping by Hugh Keene kept the Jays from scoring the go-ahead goal in the final minutes of regulation and in 20 minutes of overtime.
In penalty kicks, the two teams both scored on 3-of-5 shots – to send things into the second round of PKs – where the Jays outlasted the Eagles by a 4-3 score.
While the game ads another chapter to long list of outstanding SoBoCo vs Jeff City duels, the Eagles will have to shake off the loss quickly as they will host a Class 1 Final Four team from last season on Thursday – Belle comes to Ashland looking for revenge from last year’s 2-0 loss at the hands of the Eagles.
