Last Friday evening, the SBC soccer team opened the Hannibal Shoot Out by facing the high-powered Perryville Pirates (4-2). The Pirates are only two years removed from claiming the 2nd place Class 2 trophy in the state tournament, and it didn’t take long to see that they were the superior team in this match. Perryville controlled play from start to finish, with strong midfield play and most often winning 50/50 balls and second-ball opportunities. The Eagles’ strong team play allowed them to end the first 40 minutes of play with the match scoreless. SBC goalkeeper Emery Arnold recorded seven saves to keep the Pirates off the board in that opening half. The Pirates wouldn’t be held scoreless forever, though, and notched goals in the 52nd, 61st, and 64th minutes to claim the 3-0 victory.
