LEAD SPORTS STORY: Eagles fall to Hickman, win Springfield tournament crown

The Southern Boone County High School girls soccer team saw their perfect start to the season come to an end in a 4-0 loss to Hickman on Monday night.

The Kewpies jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first half, and the Eagles could never quite mount a comeback. Hickman started their scoring with a goal at the 31st minute. Good footwork from the Hickman forward allowed her to thread her way through the Southern Boone defense. The shot went into the goal without an Eagle defender to contest it and put SoBoCo in the hole 3-0.

Hickman again tacked onto their lead in the 24th minute of the second half, getting the ball to the front of their offense with ease. The shot was just outside of goalie Jo Scheer’s outstretched hands, and that final goal was all the Kewpies would need to close out the win.

Southern Boone was unable to get off a good shot at the goal, as Hickman controlled the ball for much of the game. The Kewpies speed and quickness, usually a hallmark of an Eagles win, kept the SoBoCo defenders on their heels. At times, SoBoCo simply had to punch the ball out of bounds to give their defense time to set up and to keep another Kewpie goal from hitting the net.
