Eagles defeat Kewpies

The SoBoCo Eagles showed some leather on Thursday night.

Eagles’ shortstop Kylee Lammers made an amazing running catch behind third base in foul territory in the sixth inning and right fielder Jayden Wren went back on a ball and made a running catch in the second inning for the spectacular plays of the game. But the rest of the game, the Eagles were just simply solid in the field.

That defense, and timely hitting, led the Eagles to a 5-3 win over a talented Hickman Kewpies team.

The Eagles are now 5-0 on the season and play at South Callaway and California next week.

SoBoCo posted two first inning runs on a lead-off double by Courtney Phillips and Hickman’s error on Kate Ponder’s sacrifice bunt. Ponder then scored on a wild pitch after Bril Volle bunted her to third.

SoBoCo got two more runs in the second when Carrie Ponder reached on an error, Courtney Phillips walked and Lammers got a two-out hit to score both of them.

Hickman had difficulties at the plate solving Ashley Osborne’s off-speed pitches, but notched a run in the third and got a two-run home run in the fourth.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Eagles got an insurance run when Wren got a base hit and scored on Phillips’ double to right-centerfield.

But the solid Eagles defense was the story of the game.

“Kylee’s play on defense was just huge,” Eagles coach Ashley Anderson said afterwards. “We have talked a lot about momentum and we showed tonight that defense can give you that momentum as much as offense.”

The win was Anderson’s 100th career win as head coach at Southern Boone.
