Despite school closings due to weather, the Southern Boone County School District met Monday, December 16.

Construction is now completed on Red Tail Drive, which leads to the new central office building. It was finished the first week of December.

“I wanted to wait and bill the city for their share when the work was complete. When the money the city owes is received, we will be $300,000 plus on the 2018 construction budget,” said Superintendent Chris Felmlee.

The school district has five years to use the 2018 bond issue money.

“The maintenance facility needs a new building to open up space for construction on the 2021 bond issue,” said Felmlee.

The current facility needs a new roof, and the board would like to see a new maintenance facility located off of Red Tail Drive. Southern Boone County would need to pass the 2021 school bond issue making way for the expansion at the middle school.

An expansion would construct two conjoined wings at the Middle School; one for the fifth and sixth grades and one for seventh and eighth grades.

The primary school expansion is currently within budget and the projected timeline.

“The masons are working on the second level concrete block walls and need doubly three working days to finish. The roof bar joints are on-site and ready to be installed once the second level block walls are finished,” said project manager Jim Russel. “If weather allows, the iron workers are schedule to set the roof bar joists and metal decking towards the end of December.”
