The heat, like Jessica John’s right forearm, packed a powerful punch on Saturday afternoon.

John, a 10-year-old karate student in the YMCA’s program, took a whack at a two-inch board during the Lemonade Daze Karate demonstration and chopped it right in two.

The first 90-degree-plus weather of the summer took nearly as vicious a whack out of vendors and attendees at Ashland’s first run of its new summer festival.

There were plenty of vendors, water balloons and birds. There was plenty to eat, drink and great music. What was missing was plenty of people.

But there was plenty of heat, which, according to organizers, kept many of the people at home on Saturday afternoon. But the first running of the Lemonade Daze was, by all accounts, a fun time at Ashland City Park.
