Southern Boone fire fighters rescued a woman who fell off a cliff in the Devil’s Backbone area last Wednesday. The victim, a 21-year-old, was hiking with friends after dark along Backbone Road near Cedar Creek, according to Southern Boone Fire Protection District spokesperson Roger Jaeger.

“She was pretty lucky,” Jaeger said, “we had 16 fire fighters there and needed the basket to get her back up to the road. She fell about 30-feet, but her only injury was to the back of her head – but it was not a serious injury.”

Jaeger said the fire district has handled a number of similar calls over the years, and they usually happen after dark.

“We had a fall near the Easley cave one year where a group of college boys were there and a young man fell and we had to go get him – in a freezing rain.”

Most often, the fire district serves the Southern Boone area as emergency responders and frequently those calls are to car crashes on Highway 63.
