A New Name for the Road Back to School

by Bruce Wallace

When school starts on Aug. 17, students at SoBoCo Middle School and SoBoCo High School will travel a new street to arrive at their classrooms.

Eagle Avenue was to be unveiled this morning in front of the Middle School as the new street name, utilizing the school’s mascot.

As City Administrator Lyn Woolford noted, Main Street north of Broadway has not officially changed names, but he and others hope the “Eagle Avenue” idea sticks.

Southern Boone Economic Development Council’s Kim Ponder helped the SoBoCo High School get the project off the ground.

“We have worked with the Southern Boone High School Student Council in an effort to broaden their reach,” Ponder said. “We have worked with them on other projects – such as the annual leadership breakfast – and have challenged them to do projects outside the high school.”

The Student Council, led by then-president Katrina Gateley, approached and got approval from the school board and then spoke with the City of Ashland.
