According to a 2018 study by the National Center of Education Statistics, schoolteachers spend an average of nearly $500 of their own money on supplies for their classrooms per schoolyear. A PTA sponsored fundraiser held at the Southern Boone Elementary and Primary schools in December raised an impressive $25,643 to date, (with 94% of pledged donations collected so far), which will help relieve some of the financial burden placed on the district’s teachers.
Through the Apex Leadership Company’s fundraising program, students at the two schools were taught lessons in leadership and good citizenship by three on-site coaches who embedded themselves within the Southern Boone community for the duration of the two-week event. The culmination of the program was a Fun Run which brought in donations for every lap students completed. Primary School principal Brandy Clark said, “The Apex Fun Run program was a wonderful experience for our students. The program was much more than just fundraising. Our students learned important leadership skills and will have memories that last for years to come.”
Becky Moore is a kindergarten teacher and a parent of three students in the Southern Boone school district. As a result, she was nominated to be the chairperson of the fundraiser committee where she spearheaded the effort to host the Apex event.
