Eagles golfer leads on Day 1, falls to tie for second place

Southern Boone Eagles golfer Brayden Watts had a blistering first round 69 score to lead the Class 3 State Tournament. However, Watts fell off the pace in the Tuesday round, falling behind the eventual winner.

The State Tournament was held in Sedalia.

Watts, a senior, was swinging hot sticks at the end of the season. He won the district tournament and then qualified for the State meet by shooting a 76, good enough for second place at Sectionals.

Watts won the Tri-County Conference Tournament in late April with a 80 after bad weather tortured high school golfers throughout the spring.

But Watts’ game came around in early May.

“He is doing just about everything right at the right time,” said Eagles golf coach Dave Gill. “He is playing well up and down the golf course.”

Watts was alone at the top of the leader board after the first day with a 69, however, it was crowded in the first five spots.

Nine golfers shot a 74 or better on the first day, where there was a nice breeze blowing.
