The Southern Boone County volleyball team’s season ended with a second-place finish in districts after a meeting with Kirksville in the district final on Oct. 23.

SoBoCo won the first game of districts over Fulton the night before to send them to a semifinal matchup against Boonville. Earlier in the season, Boonville and the Eagles faced off in a conference matchup that went to three sets. Then, Southern Boone had been able to control the play of a middle hitter who could dominate the net and came out with the win. They would have to replicate that play if they wanted to advance in districts.

The district semifinal looked like it would be easier than the previous matchup against Boonville with SoBoCo up 21-15 in the first set. Behind big blocks by the Boonville middle and then a big kill, the Pirates notched it at 23-23. Outside hitter Sayde Taggert drilled a ball down the line for a kill to take the Eagles up by one, but a deep tip that was misplayed by libero Sydney Mattas tied up the game again. Middle hitter Brooklyn Mars got a big kill from the outside, and the Eagles went on to win the first set 26-24.

Long service runs from Southern Boone kept the Boonville middle in the back row for much of the second set and smart tipping combined with powerful swings put the Pirates away in the second set, 25-7.
