Eagles defense holds Tigers to nine second half points, 41-29 win.

The St. James Tigers were very successful shooting 3-point shots in their first two district games last week.

But on Friday night, they were forced to shoot them with a Southern Boone Eagles defender standing in their face.

It was a tough night for the Tigers.

Allowing only nine points in the second half, the Eagles broke open the championship game with a 12-4 fourth quarter run and defeated St. James 41-29 for the Class 3, District 9 championship.

It is the third consecutive district championship for the Eagles.

Up 29-25 after three periods, SoBoCo went to Skyler Beeson and Kylie Shoot in the fourth period. The two seniors took the game over.

After an Emma Anderson basket to make the score 33-27, Beeson and Shoot scored the rest of the points for SoBoCo. Both Beeson and Shoot scored 9 points, Anderson led the Eagles with 10 points – all of them in the paint.

“Everyone in the building wearing red and everyone on the floor wanted those two to get the ball in the fourth quarter,” said Eagles coach Tony Phillips of Beeson and Shoot. “They got the ball to the hoop and got the job done.”

Of course, once again, it was the Eagles defense that was the star of the game. “We just played outstanding on defense,” Phillips said.

“We had a great team effort from everyone.”

Anderson and Shoot both had four rebounds – the Eagles had 21 rebounds as a team, about the same as St. James, but the Eagles had 12 offensive boards to St. James’ 6.

The two teams opened the game with only a slim difference, SoBoCo holdiing a 9-7 lead after one quarter.
