The SoBoCo Eagles wrestling continued its climb up the wrestling hill this past weekend, leap-frogging eight teams at the St. Clair Tournament to place fifth – and crowning two champions.

Dominic Lawrence at heavyweight (18-5) and Blae Schmidt at 132 lbs, (unbeaten at 27-0) both won gold medals at the tournament. The Eagles also had four wrestlers place fourth – Connor Phillips at 106 lbs, Bo Varvil at 152 lbs., Cooper Mange at 182 lbs., and Charlie Smith at 220 lbs. – and left their coach quite pleased.

Eagles wrestlers Blake Schmidt, left, and Dominic Lawrence won gold medals at the St. Clair Tournament on Saturday.

“We continue to improve with every match,” said Eagles coach Trent Tracy. “I have had other coaches and even referees comment on how much everyone on the team has improved.”

The Eagles are not just gathering compliments from opposing coaches, they are taking it to their opponents on the mat.

The Eagles defeated Tipton on January 17 by a 60-17 score with Blaine Sapp, Dawson Paul, Jackson Sartain, Tanner Smith and Lawrence all recording pins. Phillips, Schmidt, Mange and Trent Garriott had forfeits in the Eagles win.
