The 2020 Southern Boone Classic basketball tournament tipped off Monday night with girl’s teams from Hallsville, Hickman, Fulton, Boonville along with Southern Boone varsity and junior varsity squads.

The Eagles faced off with a revitalized Fulton Hornet squad. Press defense used by Southern Boone slowed the Hornets giving the Eagles a 63-56 victory.

“Defense is our motto,” Eagles head coach Damon Wren said with a smile. “We go up tempo most of the time.”

Gabbie Bruce lead the scoring with 20 points and Lexi Ussery contributed 15 points.

The Eagles junior varsity team were not as successful losing to Boonville 64-36. They will compete against Fulton on Wednesday at 4:30p.

The Southern Boone varsity next faces fourth seeded Hickman on Wednesday at 6:00p. The Kewpies were able to win a squeaker in their match with a win over third seed Hallsville 46-43.

Wren says Hickman will be a challenge for his team.

“They have a really good senior named Maci Kuchta and she’s a tough player. They run pretty much everything through her so we’ll have to key on her Wednesday,” he said.

The girl’s tournament championship game will be held on Saturday at 6:00 p.m.
