With less than four minutes left in a scoreless tie at Monett on Saturday, a Cubs defender casually played the ball back to his goal keeper.

Big mistake.

Neither the defender or the goalie saw Eagles forward Rece Gilmore streak downfield, confront the goalie, take the ball right off his foot and then flick it into the goal.

The play took only seconds, but it brought the visiting Eagles to their feet – and crushed the hopes of the Monett Cubs.

The 1-0 win propels the Eagles into the Final Four on Friday against Priory at Fenton.

“I sort of read his eyes,” Gilmore said of the goalie. I knew he was going to his right and just took the ball off his foot. Then I went to my right and was past him.”
