Eagles soccer team blanks Osage

The SoBoCo Eagles soccer team jumped out to a fast start, got three goals from Rece Gilmore and blanked the Osage Indians on Tuesday 8-0.
While the Eagles are a young team this season and not expected to contend with the larger, St. Louis programs as they have in the past, they proved they can still dominate Mid-Missouri schools in their season opener in Ashland.
“I thought we moved the ball around really well,” said Eagles coach Chris Miller. “The passing was good and it provided us plenty of opportunities. Their goalie made some big saves and actually played a very good game.”
While SoBoCo’s defense – a veteran unit on this young squad – was not tested, the Eagles midfield showed its athletic talent, keeping the Indians from mounting an organized attack throughout the game.
The Eagles will host Boonville – another district champion from last year – on Thursday at 5 p.m.
• The Eagles volleyball team fell to 1-1 on the season, losing their home opener to Boonville on Tuesday.
The Eagles fell in the first game, but battled back to win the second game behind the hitting of Sayde Taggart, defense of Emma Straub and setting of Kayla Sage and won 25-18.
However, the Eagles fell behind early in the deciding game of the match.
Boonville opened an 11-6 lead. They widened that margin to 19-13 and held off any rally attempts by the Eagles to win 25-17.
“We played well against an experienced, talented team,” said Eagles coach Jamie Nelson. “We have to make fewer mistakes, but I’m pleased with how this young team is playing so early in the season.”
The Eagles face the Fatima Comets at home next Monday.
• The Eagles softball team was rained out of its game with Fatima on Tuesday and will face the comets tonight at home. First pitch is at 5 p.m.
