Eagles defeat Jays in PKs

Monday, September 14 was a beautiful evening for soccer. Southern Boone traveled to Jefferson City to take on what many believe will be the most talented team they face during the regular season: the Jefferson City Jays (5-1). The Jays, an elite-eight team in last season’s Class 4 state playoffs, featured seventeen talented seniors. In hushed tones before the match began, most Eagle fans expected it would be a long night for their boys. In fact, it was a long night – with two extra periods played – but the outcome couldn’t have been better.

It was an extremely competitive game throughout. The Jays featured outstanding technical players at every position on the field, and their speed was often superior to that of the Eagles. In the first half, they placed ten shots on goal, while the Eagles could only muster one. But that one shot was a difference maker. With only four-and-a-half minutes until halftime in the scoreless game, a Jay defender was called for a handball in the box. Senior co-captain Trenton Roney stepped up to take the penalty kick, which he drove high and into the net above the keeper’s hands. One to nothing, Southern Boone.
