The Southern Boone YMCA announced on Friday that it has placed under contract 15 acres on the northwest side of Liberty Lane at Main Street which is owned by the Lenger family.

The terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

The Southern Boone YMCA will remain a branch of the Jefferson City YMCA, said branch director Kip Batye.

“We are talking about a few years down the road,” Batye said of the future home of the YMCA, “but we are very excited about the YMCA’s future in Ashland.”

Batye said the acreage, on the northwest portion of the 40-acre Lenger property, would be ample room for a multi-facility YMCA campus.

“We would plan to build in phases, starting with a fitness center, add a track and basketball court and in the future look to build a swimming pool,” Batye said. “There would also be space for ball fields, if we wanted to look at that.”

Batye said a typical YMCA facility involves 10-12 acres and that the Lenger property provides an excellent location, near the Primary and Elementary Schools and across from the new Liberty Landing development. “The sky is the limit for what we can do with 15 acres,” Batye added.

Ashland realtor Carl Freiling, who serves on the YMCA board, assisted in brokering the purchase and said the land purchase assures the community that the YMCA is here for the longterm.
