America’s Favorite Crossing Guard is an award sponsored by Washington, D.C. advocacy group SafeKids WorldWide.

The annual award recognizes an often over-looked individual who protects our children.

Crossing guards protect our kids on their way to and from school, encourage safe behaviors and show up rain or shine. We have an amazing crossing guard and we want to honor him.

The nomination of Ashland Police Chief Lyn Woolford includes:

“Ashland Police Chief Lyn Woolford is an amazing crossing guard. He loyally shows up every day to the intersection near the primary and elementary schools to keep the kids safe – rain, shine, or snow. He directs traffic and assists kids and adults to cross the street safely. He entertains everyone by wearing different hats, gloves and accessories to keep them guessing as to what he will be wearing that day.

Over the years, we have seen parrot, chicken, knitted pom-pom, taco, hamburger and Santa hats. There have also been mohawks and Mickey Mouse gloves to name a few.

Kids wave, high five, smile and greet him. Chief Woolford knows many by name. They often say “He is the best!” and “He keeps us safe!.”

Ashland is growing and the attention to safety has to keep up with the growth. The Southern Boone Schools and the Ashland Police Department work together to keep kids safe in the district. They are always looking for solutions to create the best environment for the Ashland families.”

The winner of the America’s Favorite Crossing Guard will be done by computer voting.

The school district where the winning crossing guard works will receive $10,000. The second place winner’s school district will receive $7,500 and the third place winner’s school district will receive $5,000.

Voting begins 8:00am eastern time on November 19, 2018 and ends at 11:59pm eastern time on November 30, 2018, so mark your calendars!
