Flag Football Kicks Off

The smaller-sized footballs and the parents in lawn chairs along the sidelines look the same – and so is the player enthusiasm – but the jerseys and a few rules are very new.

First and second grade flag football players saw some action on Sunday at Ashland City Park. The league is administered by the YMCA this season with volunteer parent-coaches. The league is a part of the NFL Flag, sponsored by the National Football League.

The first- and second-grade flag football program started their season on Sunday with games between the Packers and Cowboys and Chiefs and Broncos. The league is sponsored for the first time by the YMCA and is a part of the NFL Flag – an organization sponsored by the National Football League to get more kids interested in football.

YMCA Director Kip Batye said it was a natural pairing for the YMCA to be involved.

“It has been well-run for several years by the parents,” Batye said, “but by us taking a role, it gives the parents a chance to be parents.”
