When property owner Dave Westhoff had workers begin tearing shingles off of his duplex at Redbud and Henry Clay last week, he was surprised to get a phone call from the City of Ashland reminding him that he needed a permit for the work.

“I didn’t know about that and I’m not sure everyone at the city knows what the code is, either,” Westhoff said after he paid for his permit.

The structural changes requiring a permit can be anything from a roof to major plumbing changes that a do-it-yourselfer can perform.

According to Mayor Gene Rhorer, the permitting process is nothing new and the city will contact property owners when they realize there is work being done.
